Episcopo writes on a trip to Italy and his work, "In November 2019, I travelled to Italy with the International Center for Photography at Civitella Ranieri in Umbertide.

I was in Umbria in the center of Italy, which is often referred to as the “green heart” of Italy, with Tuscany just north and Rome to the south. Umbria is known for tobacco, black truffles and of course, its vineyards.

While traveling through Umbertide, Assisi, Gubbio and Spello—just some of the medieval cities in the Umbria region—I had the opportunity to visit farms, kitchens, festivals, vineyards and even went on a truffle hunt. We scored 5 truffles in about 45min, pretty cool.

Food has long been the subject matter of my work and my Italian-American heritage often inspires my work or, at least finds a way into it. For me, this trip was about getting back to the basics of photography. In my work I often use a studio, lights and a large crew to create a single image. This trip was about me, a camera and my thoughts.

Sometimes the work does not always capture the literal story, such as the photograph of the back office of the olive oil press. I was there watching olive oil be made, but noticed an open door in the back of the pressing room, beyond which was the lovely green office. The glimpse we see tells the story of that person and place.

In another image, the hand holding the drink is Aldo, the owner of Osteria del Bottaccione, known for its mushroom dishes, where we were invited in for a private meal.

For me, this trip was the collimation of years of working with food and the inspiration of art, history and heritage that in so prominent in my work."
