Kathleen writes of her work: "Colors intoxicate me, forms intrigue, shadows both reveal and hide surfaces. The urban and natural world attracts and compels me to make art.

Printmaking, oil paint, pastels, and collage are materials I use to create pictures, both real and imagined. Images that can lead the viewer from the real world to the mysterious.

Looking at the world around me, I find inspiration in the common place--a view through a window, the effects of color on a black and white print, the variety of shadow shapes as light filters through the trees. What is noticed becomes my subject. My art practice focuses on the joy of discovery, the challenge of an idea, and the patience to bring an image through to completion.

I am often surprised by what I see, "The Red Door With Smile" being one example. It is a view through my studio window. First, a charcoal sketch, next, a study painted in oil, and then a drawing in graphite. The fourth step is to build a collagraph plate with cardboard, cord and glue. I make a series of rubbings to check my progress and when complete, seal it with acrylic medium. I use a brayer to roll out a thin layer of ink, and then add colorful elements with Chine-collé.

A Philadelphia based artist, I received my B.S. degree from The College of New Jersey and taught in the public schools of N.J. for 32 years. I have studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Kean University, The New School, and at The Art Students League. My work is in private collections as well as the Newark Museum Library and the Dana Library of Rutgers University."
