vacant, Unpigmented Oil and Pastel on Paper, 20 x 30 inches, 24 x 33 inches framed.

Nancy Sophy's work is based around identity and the passing of time. A personal vocabulary of symbols describes intangible subjects as succinct visual expressions. Memories of and a sense of dislocation from Sophy's family heritage also inform Sophy's imagery. The drawings, paintings and light box works Sophy creates are executed through techniques informed by shifting points of view. Process is integral to Sophy's practice; for example in making drawings with unpigmented oil on paper, for which Sophy has developed ways of backlighting with a light box, and a method of grounding others with pastel, to hide, reveal and change effects and textures. Similarly, Sophy's paintings explore a cohesive range of subjects through varied techniques and experimentation with surface effects and materials.
