Vicki Israel, Sgraffito Platter, 2020. 11 inch Platter.
Sgraffito is a form of decoration made by scratching through the glaze to reveal the clay. It is then covered with a clear satin glaze.
Vicki Israel's love for clay first started when she took a ceramics class in high school. Israel went on to college majoring in Ceramics and received her BFA in Crafts from the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts). Then came marriage, kids and a 30 year career as an elementary art teacher.
Her work incorporates the many processes she used in her teaching: color, shape, line and texture. Israel constructs each piece using hand building techniques, her pieces are functional, yet decorative. She enjoys exploring form, using surface decoration and texture as integral parts of her work. Nature inspires her, as well as the urban landscape.
